Description: This themed correlation of activities is intended to assist primary educatorsin
extending and integrating student learning within current curriculum and
instructional practice. We have chosen a format that addresses a wide variety
of learning styles and approaches. All of the activities included in this themed
packetare designed to meet current educational standards in an exciting and innovative
manner. We have chosen our favorite classroom activities all of which are based
upon
quality children’s literature within a “fish” theme. The
following components have been included to offer you a wide variety of activities
to choose from.
Although many of these activities are designed for use in a kindergarten
classroom they can be easily adapted to the pre-school or primary classroom as well.
- Poem/Song/Rhymes – There are numerous poetry applications for use
in
the
primary classroom including: shared reading, pocket chart center, writer’s response
prompt, and sponge activities. Thematic poetry and extension activities have
been provided to enhance the learning process.
- Student Books – Individual student books are a wonderful way
to promote independence and fluency in reading.

- Class Book - Class books are commonly used to extend a favorite poem
or piece of literature and to encourage students to synthesize concepts of
print.
- Word Play – This activity is to be used in a classroom center
or for
a choosing activity.
- Writing – Writing opportunities allow students to extend the learning
process while enhancing comprehension. The use of writing connections is
paramount to successful student achievement. A writing prompt and a writing
page have beenprovided for use in centers, writer’s
workshop, journals, and guided writing.
- Math – A math mat and pattern cards are provided to explore the principles
of numeration, algebra and mathematical functions. We have also provided
a rainbow colored
goldfish graphing activity and pattern.
- Science – This is an important curricular component that emphasizes
prediction, exploration, observation, data analysis, synthesis, and discovery.
We have listed several activities for you to consider in the area of social
sciences.
- Art – Art projects provide additional opportunity to extend literature
and learning by using various media and accessing student creativity. We
have provided the patterns and activities for a fish themed hat, paper plate
fish, and a print decorated fish.
- Recipes – Hands on learning is an essential element to any curriculum
and cooking in the classroom is a perfect way to enhance scientific inquiry,
math, and literacy development. We have carefully chosen three recipes that
compliment this
unit of study. The recipes included are Fish Sandwiches, Graham Cracker Aquariums,
and Jell-o ponds.
- Home Connection – A take home activity has been included to encourage families
to share in the learning experience. We have provided a book report and a
research project that have been designed to be completed either at home or
at school.
- Behavior Management – Certificates of achievement and behavioral
incentives have been provided to thematically encourage children. We hope
you have fun implementing this fish unit into your current curriculum and
practice.
