About the Series:
Each title introduces a different
word family as well several high frequency words and the beginning skills for
reading.
Each title offers students varied opportunity to develop a wider range of decoding
skills, consonant and vowel recognition as well as concepts of print. Students
will learn to discriminate onsets from rimes, utilize picture cues, develop
a strong sense of graphophonics and semantics. As students begin to read and
understand more about the onset and rime connection found in word families,
they will begin to think of words as not only a series of individual letters
and sounds, but as easily recognizable segments or chunks of language. This
greatly enhances word attack and decoding skills. Vocabulary, sight word recognition,
and comprehension will increase as well with the introduction of each new book.
How to Use This Series:
These Word Family books may be used in several different manners depending upon student
ability level and instructional purpose.
- They may be read aloud to students as a means by which to
introduce word families and to experience language.
- They may be used as a shared reading in which the students participate
by reading along with the teacher developing concepts of print, word sense and gaining an understanding of the reading process.
- They may also be used as guided reading books allowing students the opportunity to develop individual reading skills and decoding strategies.
- These books could also be placed in a library for independent reading or in literacy centers along with word building activities and games.
Any one method or combination of methods in which the Word Family books are utilized will enhance literacy development in beginning readers.
