Many teachers are looking for quick and easy skill-based routines for their classrooms. This was created to help children build fluency in reading with words that are common, predictable and needed in their vocabulary.

This practice uses most letters. There are 50+ Word Families in all. There are 6 words for each word family.

They are: ack, ad, ail, ain, ake, ale, all, am, ame, an, ank, ap, ash, at, ate, aw, ay, eat, eep, eet, ell, en, ent, est, ice, ick, ide, ight, ile, ill, in, ine, ing, ink, ip, it, oat, ock, og, oil, oke, oo, ook, oom, oop, op, ore, ot, ought, ow (how), ow (blow), own, uck, ug, ump, unk

To use Word Family Fluency Practice in your classroom, first, you will need to print all the pages.

Second, you will need to decide how you want to use the pages. If you want flash cards: laminate, cut and go! If you would prefer a book: laminate, cut and bind or staple. You can also print individual pages for the students to write on for each word family. The possibilities are endless!

Third, when it's time to teach, have the student read each phoneme in the word or read the word without breaks in-between sounds. For example, if the word is "rat", the reader could say /r/ /at/ or /rat/.

When the children are finished reading through the words, always make sure to take a minute or two to check and see if there were any words we should review.

You can use this large group, small group or one-on-one. You could even make then for your children to keep in their book boxes! You are only limited by your creativity!
